Acid reflux, also known as heartburn, is an almost completely avoidable disorder. Acid reflux is simply the condition that results from the stomachs inability to contain acid which causes the acid in the stomach to back up into the throat or esophagus. Sometimes the condition can be medical related. Most of the time, however, this reflux of acid is caused by something that you have done or something that you have a habit of doing. We will discuss these causes and how to prevent them during the course of this article.
Eating the wrong foods is the most common cause of acid reflux. In these cases, acid reflux is usually called heartburn and is temporary. If you are experiencing heartburn regularly, take a long and hard look at your diet choices. Are spicy foods a large part of your diet? Do you eat a lot of chocolate? Do you eat foods that contain lots of garlic? Heartburn can also be caused by foods containing tomatoes. While these are fairly common ingredients, avoiding them isn’t that difficult. Cutting chocolate out of your diet may not be fun but it’s bound to be better than dealing with heartburn.
In some cases, acid reflux is caused by medications. It has become fairly well known that muscle relaxers can cause acid reflux and heartburn. If you take any type of blood pressure medications, these can also cause acid reflux attacks. You can even get acid reflux attacks from certain non-prescription blood thinners, such as ibuprofen and Advil. If you have a sensitive stomach you should try to stay away from these medications.
If it’s necessary for you to take this type of medication, you can still try to find out if there’s a substitute that would not have these side effects or at least a way to make them less severe.
Caffeine is one of the major acid reflux causes. While caffeine is a great pick me up, it tends to wreak havoc on your system. An acid reflux attack can be a sign that you need to limit your caffeine intake or even cut it out all together. Although caffeine withdrawal is harsh, it is worth it to reduce your chances of an acid reflux attack. By switching to decaf, you will be doing your body a huge favor. The majority of the time you can easily avoid acid reflux. Reducing stress, eating right, and making good lifestyle choices is all it takes. Talk to your doctor about what the major causes might be for acid reflux. Together you will figure out how best to change your lifestyle so that you won’t experience the attacks anymore (or at least cut down on them considerably).
